Bassania Foundation Visits Necropolises in Donja Ljubogošta

The team of the Foundation “Heritage Watchdogs – Bassania”, consisting of Emir and Feđa, embarked on a tour of the cultural and historical heritage of the municipality of Pale, which boasts over 100 medieval tombstone necropolises, Illyrian hillforts, and transitional Islamic tombstones. This time, we focused on the area around the Mokranjska Miljacka.

The first necropolis we present is located in Donja Ljubogošta, within the Orthodox cemetery of the Stanišić family, and contains 42 medieval tombstones. We received information about this necropolis from our friend Milica, who recorded 18 tombstones in 2020. However, after clearing the cemetery, a significantly larger number of tombstones was discovered, as many had sunk into the ground or become overgrown with vegetation. The necropolis includes gabled, chest-shaped, and slab tombstones, but without decorations or inscriptions.

The second necropolis, also in Donja Ljubogošta, is situated on the Stanišić family property and contains seven medieval tombstones—three within the property and four outside the fence. Among them are three slabs and four chests. It is assumed that the necropolis was once larger, as holes were observed from which tombstones were removed over time. It is commendable that the Stanišić family maintains and cleans this necropolis, although access is limited due to fencing.

Interestingly, these necropolises were not recorded by Šefik Bešlagić, who documented necropolises in this region, so we congratulate Milica for being the first to register them.
