Institutional Reaction Following the Appeal: Protection Process Initiated for the Crkvina Necropolis in Fajtovci

Following our announcement on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, regarding the endangerment of the medieval tombstone necropolis Crkvina in the village of Fajtovci, Sanski Most municipality, the Commission to Preserve National Monuments of Bosnia and Herzegovina contacted us on the same day. They proposed that we submit a formal request to declare this necropolis a National Monument of BiH to ensure its additional and institutional protection.

The Foundation submitted the request immediately, although we are aware that the Commission’s work is currently slowed down due to a blockade of its assembly. Nevertheless, we have favorable information that the process of appointing a new Commission is underway and that an end to the blockade is expected soon.

Our information was also promptly received by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of the Una-Sana Canton (USK), which informed us that they will urgently conduct a field visit to determine the current state and the degree of endangerment of the necropolis.

We have also notified the Federal Institute for the Protection of Monuments and expect their involvement in resolving this urgent situation.

In the coming period, we will also contact the company Lager from Posušje, the concessionaire of the open-pit brown coal mine, in light of concerning information that private plots in the immediate vicinity of the necropolis are being purchased for the purpose of further mine expansion. We note that the Municipality of Sanski Most attempted to intervene in this case, but concession matters fall under the jurisdiction of the Government of USK and the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We are aware that the protection of this exceptionally valuable cultural-historical site will be a long and uncertain process, but we firmly state that we will not give up, regardless of all pressures and challenges.
