Necropolis Crkvina: Medieval Tombstones, Roman Monument, and Bosnian Church in One Place

The team of the Foundation “Heritage Watchdogs – Bassania” visited the Crkvina necropolis of medieval tombstones in Klečkovac, in the area of the former municipality of Sokolovići, today Sokolac.

This site, located below Illyrian hillforts, is especially significant as a Roman plaque depicting the Thracian Horseman was found here, along with the remains of a Bosnian Church, after which the necropolis was named.

The necropolis consists of 30 chest-shaped medieval tombstones. They are well-carved but without visible decorations. Unfortunately, the site is neglected—the tombstones have sunk into the ground and are overgrown with vegetation.

Crkvina was first recorded by Sergejevski in 1944, and later by Bešlagić in 1971, after which it was included in the Archaeological Lexicon of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We would like to thank our friend Marin from Sokolac, who guided us to this necropolis, as well as Ejub for his support and transport.
