Exploring an Unrecorded Necropolis within Kasindol Hospital, East Sarajevo

At the beginning of 2024, the Foundation “Heritage Watchdogs – Bassania” presented to the public a previously unknown and unrecorded stećak necropolis located within the grounds of Kasindol Hospital in East Sarajevo. This significant discovery was brought to our attention by our friend and Foundation member Pamela Bejdić from Sarajevo, who provided us with photographs of the necropolis.

The necropolis, situated behind the former maternity ward, had been completely hidden by dense vegetation for years, remaining unseen by the public until earlier this year, when it was discovered during land clearing. This prompted us to visit the site and assess its current condition.

The necropolis contains 13 large stećaks in the shape of sarcophagi, partially sunken into the ground. They are well-crafted and oriented in the NW–SE direction.

We would like to thank our friend and Foundation member Pamela Bejdić once again for her efforts and contribution to the discovery of this beautiful necropolis.
