The Crkvina/Martin Necropolis, Fajtovci – Threat of Total Destruction Due to Mine Proximity

The Crkvina necropolis, located on Martin Hill in the village of Fajtovci, Sanski Most, is situated near the Zlauša open-pit brown coal mine, about twenty kilometers from Sanski Most, under concession by the company Lager. Coal exploitation in the open pit is expanding and has reached within only 30 meters of the necropolis, threatening it with total destruction. We appeal to all competent authorities in Sanski Most, the Una-Sana Canton, and the Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports to take all possible measures to protect this necropolis from further destruction. Media outlets from Sanski Most and Prijedor reported on this case three years ago, but no effects or improvements were achieved; therefore, we warn again that urgent action is required, otherwise it will be too late.

Traces of walls and remains of a medieval Bosnian church are preserved at the necropolis, though they have been excavated and scattered. Around and within this space lies a necropolis of approximately 50 medieval tombstones in the shape of chests and sarcophagi, many of which are damaged or destroyed. The necropolis was first recorded by Nada Miletić, but archaeological research has never been conducted.

We extend our thanks to our friend Ermin from Sarajevo for the photographs and information provided.
