The Zlatovo Necropolis of Medieval Tombstones – Stone Giants near Srebrenica

The Zlatovo–Ljeskovik necropolis of medieval tombstones is located in the southeastern part of the Srebrenica municipality, about 25 km from the town center, not far from the local macadam road connecting Ljeskovik and Urisići. It sits at an elevation of 684 meters, with the following geographical coordinates: longitude 19° 20’ 18” E and latitude 43° 59’ 59” N.

This is certainly one of the most impressive necropolises, both within the Srebrenica municipality and across Bosnia and Herzegovina. What draws immediate attention and sets this necropolis apart from others are the exceptionally massive specimens of medieval tombstones (measuring 290 × 120 × 200 cm and weighing approximately 8 tons), which were precisely carved from excellent quality limestone. The necropolis consists of 18 medieval tombstones, specifically 15 gabled roofs with pedestals and 3 chests.

They are arranged along a primary NE–SW alignment (and once again, Bešlagić got the orientation wrong, which is becoming quite a recurring pattern). Over the years, one of the medieval tombstones has sustained damage. There are no decorative motifs or inscriptions on the monuments. The cleanly carved, sharp edges of the tombstones are highly striking, and thanks to the quality of the stone, they have been preserved to this day.

The medieval tombstones at the necropolis are lined up in two rows, with a local road passing right between them. Until recently, this site was overgrown with brush, but the Tourist Organization, with the help of residents from surrounding villages, cleared it for visitors and marked it with tourist signage—even though the road itself is in catastrophic condition, making the site virtually inaccessible without an off-road vehicle.

Unfortunately, no archaeological excavations have ever been conducted here, and historians know nothing more about this magnificent necropolis.
