Bedem, Grajani – Visoko

The old town of Bedem, also known as Bedema, Grad, Gradina, Kula or Kulina, is located in the village of Grajani, Visoko Municipality. Although it represents a significant historical site, Bedem is less known and neglected compared to the Visoki and Čajangrad hillforts, which are undergoing restoration and conservation work.

The Bedem has dimensions of approximately 100 x 30 metres and is rectangular in shape, with massive rounded towers on the south and north sides. These dimensions make it the largest hillfort in the Visoko Municipality.

Like many Illyrian hillforts, Bedem is located in a strategic position – at the estuary of the Goduša River and the Fojnica River. The approach to the hillfort and the main entrance were located on the southern side, where a current Muslim graveyard is located.

The names “Kula” and “Bedem” indicate that the hillfort was also used during the Ottoman period, which additionally emphasizes its importance throughout different eras.
