A few days ago, Enver Šljivnjak from the village of Šljivno contacted us after discovering an unusually carved stone among construction waste, asking what it actually was.
We immediately recognized a beautifully carved medieval tombstone (a chest with a pedestal) and inquired how it ended up in a waste pile by the side of the road. We were informed that six or seven years ago, a barn within his household property was demolished, and excavators hauled the stone to that location at the time. However, Enver only recently noticed that it was actually a medieval tombstone.
We subsequently learned that his family built the barn in the 1960s, and the medieval tombstone was built into its foundations at that time. Unfortunately, a lack of education and awareness led to the desecration and displacement of the monument from its original location.
We cannot turn back time, but we requested that the medieval tombstone be returned at least approximately to its original site, serving both as a memorial and a warning that medieval tombstones must never be disturbed or destroyed.
