Velika Gradina, located above the left bank of the Zenički potok, is a multi-layered archaeological site that includes a prehistoric hillfort, a Roman fort and a necropolis.
The plateau of the hillfort, measuring approximately 100 × 20 metres, is connected to the surrounding massif on the northeast side, while the other sides are naturally protected by steep slopes.
Fragments of prehistoric ceramics were found on the surface and slopes of the hillfort, while in several places the remains of walls built with mortar mixed with crushed bricks were discovered.
Southeast of Velika Gradina, on a sloping plateau with an area of about 4,000 m², there are traces of an out-of-town settlement. At its foot, three graves with cremated bodies were discovered, one of which contains finds such as fragments of a casserole, a spear, a knife and part of a ceramic dishes, dated to the 2nd century AD.
The locality was investigated by our respected archaeologists V. Skarić, B. Čović, I. Marijanović and L. Fekeža.
Unfortunately, Velika Gradina has been fenced for years with live wire, installed by a local cattle breeder, which makes access to this important archaeological site difficult. Visitors are forced to crawl under the wire or jump over it to get to Gradina.
This is the situation that remains the same for many years, and there are no reactions from the competent institutions, especially the Sarajevo Cantonal Institute for the Protection of Cultural, Historical and Natural Heritage.
