Foundation Bassania Presents: An Unrecorded Medieval Tombstone Necropolis in Zabrđani near Bjelimići

On the main road from Bjelimići to Glavatičevo, a few kilometers from Odžaci (the center of Bjelimići), lies the village of Zabrđani. Based on information from our friend Emin from Glavatičevo, we discovered a new, unrecorded necropolis at the Bogovo Selište site. Our surprise was even greater because it is located only 300 meters from the main road toward Zabrđani; the likely reason it remained undiscovered is that it is situated within a fenced Orthodox cemetery.

The necropolis consists of 40 medieval tombstones, specifically chests and slabs, oriented in a northeast–southwest direction. Unfortunately, the necropolis has been ruined and damaged by the Orthodox Church; construction and metal waste are found on some of the tombstones, and many have sunken or were damaged during modern burials throughout the 20th century.

Regrettably, this is not an isolated case. At numerous sites, it has been recorded that Orthodox and Catholic cemeteries – and less frequently, Muslim graveyards – were established on much older necropolises of medieval tombstones. Over time, such practices have led to their systematic damage, burial, and gradual disappearance, thereby erasing the traces of an older cultural-historical layer.

We extend our thanks to our friend Emin, who showed us this necropolis.
