Foundation “Heritage Watchdogs – Bassania” in Bešići: Visiting the Gradina and Samac Necropolises

After visiting the Illyrian site Mala Gradina — which we will present in a few days — we explored a beautiful medieval necropolis called Gradina, located about 200 meters away. The necropolis contains nine medieval tombstones (stećci) of the ridge type (sljemenjak), finely carved and well-preserved thanks to the high quality of the stone. Unfortunately, one tombstone has been overturned, and all are overgrown with vegetation.

The second necropolis, Samac, is situated around 300 meters from the first one and consists of 15 medieval tombstones, now heavily overgrown and partially damaged due to the shifting and overturning of two smaller stones. The site was named after a single isolated tombstone (stećak samac) located about 50 meters away, right next to the local road.

Next to it are the remains of a Church of the Bosnian Church, which have been excavated.

Interestingly, neither Šefik Bešlagić nor Nada Miletić recorded these necropolises separately in the Archaeological Lexicon of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They were first documented by our friend Azmir on the platform Stecakmap.info in 2020.

We thank our friend Azmir for guiding us to these locations.
