During its field survey across the Višegrad municipality, the Foundation “Heritage Watchdogs – Bassania” documented a new, previously unrecorded necropolis of medieval tombstones (stećci) in the village of Donje Dubovo. The site is located by the road and crossroads between Donje and Gornje Dubovo, which made its discovery relatively easy.
The necropolis is divided into three sections. The first section contains 15 tombstones, mostly in the form of chests (sanduk-type), roughly carved and believed to date from an earlier period.
The second section, located about 50 meters away, consists of three tombstones, which have been severely damaged due to the construction of a local road.
The third and most remarkable section includes 20 tombstones, finely carved gabled (sljemenjak) and chest-shaped monuments, both with and without bases. One tombstone bears a crescent symbol, and they are oriented in the Arian directions northwest–southeast and northeast–southwest.
Many of the tombstones have partially sunk into the ground. Above the necropolis lies an ancient/medieval hillfort (gradina), believed to have been connected to this site, which the Foundation plans to visit during a future field expedition.
