After visiting Batovo, we continued toward the village of Slatina, where we were met by our guide Sulejman, an excellent connoisseur of this region.
We set out toward the Kaurine hill, about 1 km east of the village, where a necropolis with 14 medieval tombstones is located. The monuments are poorly finished, significantly damaged today, and covered with moss and leaves. The medieval tombstones have no decorations. Although Bešlagić was the first to catalog them, he once again made an error regarding the orientation of the tombstones, which are actually positioned in a NW – SE direction; we are no longer certain whether these recorded errors in orientation are intentional or accidental.
The adjacent field is called Crkvenjača. Local stories suggest that a Bosnian Church once stood there, and before the war, researchers from Serbia came to purchase the field, but Sulejman’s mother did not agree to the sale. It is particularly interesting that an enormous medieval tombstone was once located above that site, which unknown individuals completely broke and destroyed, so that now only its remains are visible – likely the work of illegal gold seekers. Unfortunately, that medieval tombstone was never recorded, even though it was of large dimensions and situated in an open clearing.
