What Lies Among the Stones Beneath the Old Bridge in Konjic?

During a recent visit to Konjic, quite by chance from a distance, beneath the Old Bridge (Stari most) and near the “Miris lipe” restaurant, we spotted a group of stones that resembled medieval tombstones.

We descended to the site and, amidst a collection of mostly ordinary stones, identified several dressed stones whose shapes correspond to medieval tombstones in the form of chests and slabs.

We found no record in academic literature indicating that a necropolis was ever documented at this location. The well-known medieval tombstones in the park at Varda are not originally from this spot; rather, they were relocated from Lisičići and Ostrožac. Even closer are the two medieval tombstones at Musala, moved from the Prkanj site (today’s Hotel Konak), so it is possible that the stones beneath the bridge originally belonged to that former necropolis.

It is also possible that certain medieval tombstones were reused secondarily and built into the retaining wall along the Neretva River or other structures, and later extracted. Furthermore, the possibility remains that some of the stones ended up here during earlier construction work on the riverbank and the Old Bridge, which was destroyed in 1945 and subsequently restored on multiple occasions.

Without an archaeological assessment, we cannot determine the exact provenance of this group with certainty, but several of the stones genuinely deserve attention and a more detailed inspection.
